What is my Health Category?

The number 1 question we get from you is, how do I know whether I’m preferred health or regular, or what do those health categories even mean? Well, it isn’t the simplest thing question to answer, and there is a lot to it. It is not up to you or me to determine what health category you will qualify for, rather it’s the underwriter of the life insurance company that determines that.

We do however have an idea of how it works, so here it is in a nutshell:

  • Regular – Rates are standard, this is where the majority of applicants fit into. This means that you are average, you are not in perfect health, you are normal, you may even take pills for high blood pressure, or other such ailments, and as long as it’s controlled, you may qualify for a regular premium
  • Regular Plus – Same as regular
  • Preferred – Rates are little cheaper than standard, this is one step up from regular, you are in little better than average health, usually not taking prescription medication, have a fairly good family history and better than average height and weight
  • Preferred Plus – Rates are the cheapest, this is the very best category, and you are above average in height and weight, family history, you take no prescription meds whatsoever, only about 25% of people will qualify for this category
  • Now with that being said, I don’t want you to worry and obsess with this, you are what you are. One thing that I can recommend is, if you give me a call or email me, I may be able to chose a life insurance company with you, that you may have a better chance to qualify for a better rate. The reason for this is that some companies favor different types of people and by me being able to match that up , you will have a better chance to get a better price, simply because of my experience in the industry.

I will list here some Life Companies that I find very reasonable, and good to work with:

  • BMO Life (Bank of Montreal)
  • Equitable Life
  • Canada Life
  • Sun Life
  • Unity Life
  • Manulife
  • Off course there are many other companies, and very often the one for you is not even on the above list, but rest assured that there is a company out there that will give you a good policy at a good price, and I will help you find it.
